The Committee have selected the subject ‘Sources of Ground Water and their development including Conservation, Augmentation and Protection from Pollution’, and decided to examine in detail and present a Report on the subject to Parliament on priority.

The Committee have observed that Ground Water is one of the most precious natural resources. As at present more than 85% of water supplies for domestic use in rural areas and 50% of water for urban and industrial areas besides 55% of irrigation water requirements are being met from Ground Water.

The Committee understand that Ground Water level is declining very rapidly in almost every part of the country. The Ground Water has been over-exploited in many States also. Salinity ingress is taking place in the Coastal areas. There has been deterioration of Ground Water quality in many areas.

The Committee desire that meaningful and objective Report on the subject may be presented to both the Houses of Parliament.

The Committee have decided to invite written memoranda containing views/suggestions/comments of the individuals/experts/professional organisations/institutions interested in the subject matter.

Those who are desirous of submitting their memoranda to the Committee may send two copies each (in English and Hindi) thereof to Shri A.S. Chera, Director, Lok Sabha Secretariat, Room No. 152, First Floor, Parliament House Annexe, New Delhi – 110001 (Tel Nos. 23034011, 23035238 (O) and (Fax Nos. 23016836, 23010756) within 30 days of the date of the advertisement.

Those who are desirous of giving oral evidence before the Committee, besides sending memoranda, are requested to intimate the same to the Lok Sabha Secretariat for consideration of the Committee.

The memorandum which might be submitted to the Committee would form part of the records of the Committee and would be treated as ‘confidential’ and would not be circulated by anyone, as such an act would constitute a breach of privilege of the Committee.
