A National Master Plan is being finalized to tap the available potential for generating power from waste in a time bound manner. Stating this in the Lok Sabha in a written reply, Shri Vilas Muttemwar, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Non Conventional Energy Sources that a National Conference was organized to discuss various aspects of energy generation from municipal solid wastes. The States and Municipal Corporations have been requested to provide greater thrust to the development of these projects, which could be supported by the Ministry. An information package is also being prepared to provide detailed information about the potential, technologies, costs and economics.
Shri Muttemwar underlined that the progress in energy recovery from municipal solid wastes, in particular, has been slow mainly on account of the problems of collection and segregation of wastes by the municipal corporations; high capital cost of the projects; and, lack of financing, project development capabilities, conducive policies and attractive tariffs for the power generated from these projects.
