The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today approved the launching of a National Horticulture Mission (NHM) in the Department of Agriculture & Cooperation as a Centrally sponsored Scheme with an outlay of Rs.2300 crore for X Plan and appropriate structures at the National, State and District levels to promote the holistic growth of horticulture in the country.
In principle approval has been given for continuing the Mission during XI Plan. CCEA has also approved the appointment of a Mission Director of the level of Joint Secretary from within Government, or outside and for creation of seven additional posts involving an annual recurring expenditure of Rs.17 lakh.
By launching of this Mission, about 33 lakh hectares of additional area would be brought under horticultural crops and 16 lakh h.a.of senile plantation would be rejuvenated by the end of XI Plan. About 21 lakh h.a. will be covered under Integrated Pest Management. About 2,040 nurseries will be established to make available good quality planting material. It has been decided to issue the guidelines for implementing the scheme within two months.
