machinery/equipment register highest 19.2% growth

Machinery & Equipment other than transport equipment registered the highest growth of 19.2% during the period 2004-05. It is followed by textile products including wearing apparel with 18.2% and Other manufacturing industries 16.2%. Basic Chemicals and Chemical products except petroleum products and coal 14.3%, Beverages, Tobacco and related products 11.2%. All these, classified as 2 Digit level industry groups recorded a double digit increase during the period compared to the same period of the previous year. In fact, as many as 14 of the 17 two-digit industry groups showed positive and significant growth during the year. However, food products, wood and wood products, furniture and fixtures continued to show negative trend over the year.

The quick estimates of index of industrial production just released by the Central Statistical Organization, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation also pointed out that in case of Sectoral groups Mining registered 1% lesser growth during the period compared to the previous year. However, Manufacturing recorded 8.8% growth i.e. 1.4% more than the previous year and Electricity 5.2% i.e. 0.1% higher.

Coming to Use-Based Index of Industrial Production, consumer goods, consumer durables and consumer non-durables registered significant growth compared to the previous year. The growth of consumer non-durables almost doubled. Capital goods and inter-mediate goods though registered growth but in comparison with previous year, they were marginally lower. The growth in Basic goods almost remained the same at 5.5%.
