Government has decided to provide Internet Service through Cyber Cafes at Railway Stations in a phased manner, Presently, optical fibre cable is available only on 26,000 Route KMs along the railway track and work is in progress on another 6000 Route KMs. These cyber cafes will be provided on 51 important stations to start with and will have facilities such as Internet, E-mail, Audio/Video chatting, Internet telephony etc.
The existing cost of laying optical fibre cable on an average is Rs. 2 lakh per kilometre approximately. RailTel, a public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under Ministry of Railways, is executing the project and it is expected that by year 2008, Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) will be provided on about 40,000 Route KMs.
The above information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri R. Velu in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.
