installed capacity of grid interactive electricity from renewables reaches 6,160 mw

Wednesday, May 11, 2005

Shri Vilas Muttemwar, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Non-Conventional Energy Sources informed the Rajya Sabha in reply to a question today that the installed capacity for grid interactive renewable electricity has reached 6,160 MW as on 31.3.2005. He further informed that a target of 760 MW capacity addition from grid interactive renewable electricity has been set for the current year.

Shri Muttemwar told the House that the aim is to deploy 10% of the additional installed capacity for grid electricity from renewables during the 10th and 11th Plan periods. Against this during the first three years of the 10th Plan i.e. 2002-03 to 2004-05 as much as 18% of the additional installed capacity has come through renewables. This include 13% from wind (1968 MW), 2% from small hydro (267 MW) and 3% from bio-energy (407 MW).

The potential from non-conventional energy sources such as wind, small hydro and bio-energy has been estimated at around 80,000 MW, which includes 45000 MW from wind, 15000 MW from small hydro, 19,500 MW from biomass and 2700 MW from waste to energy. In addition, the estimated solar potential is 20 MW/square kilometer.
