Sixty Nine inquiry reports into accidents which took place during 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 have been submitted by the Commission of Railway Safety. Out of these 69 cases, 37 were due to failure of Railway Staff, 27 were due to other than Railway Staff and 5 have been attributed to incidental causes.
Steps taken to minimize accidents occurring due to above causes include adoption of suitable modern technology for interlocking and signaling systems, provision of Anti Collision Device, up-gradation of standard of track and rolling stock, modernization of maintenance practices, replacement of over-aged assets, up-gradation of training aids like simulators and checks on observance of safety precautions. In addition to requesting State Governments to enforce provisions of Motor Vehicles Act, publicity campaigns for precautions by road user while negotiating level crossings have been launched.
The above information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri R. Velu in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.
