The Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Smt. Meira Kumar told the Rajya Sabha today that the Government would examine the proposal for setting up a National Commission for the Aged. Replying to a supplementary to a question on the aged persons, Smt. Kumar said that the "Government is positively inclined to the suggestion."
She said that the absolute number of elder persons (60+ years) is increasing as per the Census data. Smt. Kumar said the objective of the Scheme "An Integrated Programme for Older Persons" is to provide financial assistance to Non Government Organisations for maintenance of old age homes, day care centres, mobile medicare units and non institutional service centres. The budged allocation for the scheme has been increased over the years. The B.E. for 2005-06 has been enhanced by Rs. 2.94 crores over 2004-05.
