The revenue earning freight loading on Indian Railways was 601.89 Million Tonnes in 2004-05 against initial target of 580 Million Tonnes and a revised target of 600 Million Tonnes. Indian Railways registered the highest ever incremental loading of 44.5 Million Tonnes, the previous best incremental loading was 38.65 Million Tonnes during 2003-04. The average lead during 2004-05 was 683 kms. against 684 kms. during 2003-04.

Earlier a higher incremental loading of 35.5 Million Tonnes was recorded in 1999-2000, against a backdrop of decrease in the overall freight loading of 8.46 Million Tonnes in 1998-99.

Net Tonne Kilometre (NTKM), which is a measure of volume of traffic carried, also recorded a growth of 7.90 per cent in 2004-05 over the previous year.

The major contribution in the freight loading of 2004-05 has come from iron ore for export with a growth of 36.27 per cent, coal – 7.71 per cent, cement – 9.51 per cent, fertilizer – 9.79 per cent and “other goods” – 9.35 per cent.
