Rain Forest Research Institute, Jorhat, an autonomous institute under the aegis of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, Dehradun has estimated that gregarious flowering of Muli Bamboo will occur in an area of about 18,000 sq. km. in states of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura during 2004-07.
Past experience of year 1959 showed gregarious flowering of Muli Bamboo in Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur and Barak Valley of Assam was followed by severe famine in 1960 in those areas.
The Government of India has prepared an Action Plan for Rs. 105 crore in order to tackle the problem likely to arise due to gregarious flowering of muli bamboo in North East Region, in consultation with the scientists, representatives of the state governments and concerned ministries in the Central Government. The major components of Action Plan include resource survey and mapping, resource extraction and management, resource utilisation, regeneration plan, rodent control and precautionary measures to control spread of epidemic, famine control, control of fire hazard, development of necessary infrastructure and awareness campaign.
This information was given by Minister of State for Environment and Forests Shri Namo Narain Meena in a written reply to Member of Parliament, Shri Pyare Lal Khandelwal in the Rajya Sabha today.
