expert tips for better kharif production

The Government has taken several measures to maximize production in the current kharif season. As part of kharif campaign the Government has circulated expert advisories on kharif preparation to all the concerned State Governments. The Centre has requested the State Governments to give wide publicity through media to make farmers aware of the latest technology and knowhow regarding best cultivation practices of kharif crops.


Farmers are advised to dial at Kisan Call Centre on Toll Free No.1551 between 6.00 a.m. and 10.00 p.m. for expert advice on all farm related problems.


Given below are some important tips for the current kharif season.


Use only certified quality seeds of hybrids or improved varieties recommended for the area.
Always treat the seed before sowing with fungicide and other bio-fertilizers as per the recommendation.
Adopt ridge & furrow method of sowing for better moisture utilization and to avoid water logging.
Adopt rain water harvesting through farm ponds and apply life saving irrigation in the event of long gap in rains.
Use mulching to reduce soil moisture loss.
Adopt micro-irrigation system in dry land areas.
Apply balanced use of Nitrogen, Phosphate & Potassium (NPK) to get maximum benefit of applied nutrients.
Apply Zinc Sulphate in Zinc deficient soils.
Apply micro-nutrients as per soil test report and practice Integrated Nutrient Management.
Apply Farm Yard Manure, as much as possible, for enhancement of soil health.
Control weeds timely either by hand or mechanical weeding, or by using weedicides, either pre-emergence or post-emergence.
Practice Integrated Pest Management as per prescribed package for each crop.
Adopt inter-cropping recommended for higher returns and risk cover.
