Monday, May 02, 2005

The Press Council of India which met on March 28, 2005 at New Delhi under the Chairmanship of Hon’ble Mr. Justice G.N. Ray considered a reference regarding the need to create awareness among the public for ascertaining medical compatibility while seeking matrimonial alliances. Since matrimonial advertisements in the press are a major contributor in facilitating such information, the Council felt that the Press could play an important role in the matter in public interest. It also noted that it has already advised the newspapers to carry the following message in the ‘matrimonial advertisements’ columns of their respective newspapers for the benefit of public:-

Caution :

“Readers are advised to make appropriate thorough enquiries before acting upon any advertisement. This newspaper does not vouch or subscribe to the claims and representations made by the advertisers regarding the particulars of status, age, income of the bride/bridegrooms”.

The Council opined that the Press may be advised to add another line of advice to the ‘caution note’ thus:-

“While choosing the life partner, one may also undertake health screening to prevent any genetic disorder in any future offspring”

The Press Council, advised the press to carry the above cited ‘caution note’ in its comprehensive form along with the advertisements seeking matrimonial alliances.
