Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology, has said that the Government is committed to liberalisation in the telecom sector which is creating a communication-revolution in the country. Side by side it is also aimed to create greater employment opportunities. The country is poised to provide for reforms so as to facilitate convergence of both market and technologies in developing a world class telecom infrastructure. Shri Maran said this while addressing the inaugural session of a Seminar on "Sharing of Experiences between Department of Telecom and British Telecom", here today, organised by DoT. Mr. Allen Ma, President of BT Global Services headed the British Telecom side in the whole day deliberations, sharing the experiences with the DoT. Today's deliberations come as a follow-up of Shri Maran's visit to the Labs of British Telecom located in London.
Speaking further on the occasion, Shri Maran said that as per the National Telecom Policy 1999, originally, it was targeted to provide 75 million telephone lines by the year 2005 and 175 million lines by year 2010. However, the country has achieved 100 million lines, much ahead of the target. As regards digital divide, the Minister emphasised that this required to be shirked. Shri Maran hoped that broadband would take a lead in the development of Indian Telecom Sector besides offering immense investment opportunities. The Minister urged every one including the Government, Licensor, regulator and service provider to take note of BT's experiences with positive mindset and should learn from them.
