The total copper production in the country during the financial year 2004-05 has been estimated at 4,08,092 tonnes as against 3,95,955 tonnes during the previous year. Out of this, the public sector Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) has produced 18,965 tonnes. Private sector units Hindalco Industries Limited (HINDALCO) produced 2,17,136 tonnes and Sterlite Industries (India) Limited (SIL) produced 1,71,991 tonnes.
The production of copper cathode during March 2005 was 37,785 tonnes out of which HCL produced 1,617 tonnes, HINDALCO 19,159 tonnes and SIL 17,009 tonnes.
