calls for india to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases misplaced

Tuesday, May 17, 2005

India brought home to the developed countries that calls for India to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases are misplaced. Making a presentation today at the Seminar of Government Experts on climate change being held at Bonn, Germany, during 16-17 May 2005, India pointed out how predictions of computer models that India, China, and other developing countries would overtake developed countries greenhouse gases emissions in a few decades were flawed.

Stating that Indian lifestyles were inherently sustainable, the Indian delegation further emphasized that India's policies on energy efficiency, promotion of renewable forms of energy, and emphasis on mass transport would, in any case, enable sharp reductions in emissions, provided that the necessary technologies were transferred on non-commercial terms to India.

The seminar will set the stage for formal negotiations on the next stage of the global climate change regime, after the Kyoto Protocol, in Montreal in December 2005.

The Indian Delegation is led by Dr. Prodipto Ghosh, Secretary, Ministry of Environment & Forests. The presentation was made by Dr. Surya Sethi, Adviser (Energy), Planning Commission.
