The Union Cabinet passed a condolence resolution expressing profound sorrow over the death of the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Sunil Dutt. The Cabinet also observed two minutes silence as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
Following is the text of the resolution:
The Cabinet expresses profound sorrow over the untimely death of Shri Sunil Dutt, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports in Mumbai on May 25, 2005. With his passing away, the Cabinet has lost an experienced and valued member and more importantly our nation has lost an eminent figure from its public firmament.
Shri Dutt epitomised core Indian values. He was a great exponent of the principles enshrined in our Constitution. He was a tireless champion of secular values and always showed courage in rising above narrow political interests, in his effort to secure amity between various groups. He had total commitment to the poor and the downtrodden. Time and again, he espoused the cause of the dispossessed, the marginalised, those living in slums, and victims of communal riots. He also lent his considerable public weight behind cancer prevention and the promotion of AIDS awareness. He entertained Indian Army Jawans in 1962, 1965 and 1971, by visiting various sectors, where Indian Army Jawans were wounded in action. He also led a cultural delegation of eminent artists to Bangladesh in 1971 to entertain Indian Army and Mukti Bahini personnel.
Born on June 6, 1929 in Khurd in District Jhelum, now in Pakistan, Shri Dutt was educated in Mumbai. He won universal acclaim for his outstanding performances in Indian cinema. He married Nargis in 1958. He twice won the prestigious Filmfare Best Actor Award. He was Sherriff of Mumbai in 1981-82 and was elected to the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984. He was a member of the 9th, 10th, 13th and 14th Lok Sabha.
The Cabinet extends its heartfelt condolences on behalf of the entire nation to the bereaved family.
