The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural and Rural Labourers (Base 1986-87 = 100) increased by one point and two points respectively during April 2005 compared to the previous month.
In case of Agricultural Labourers 17 states reflected an increase in indices ranging between 1 to 10 points while in three states showed a decrease ranging between 1 to 2 points.
In case of Rural Labourers 17 states reflected an increase ranging between 1 to 11 points while one state showed a decrease of two points. In another two states it remained constant.
Tripura experienced the sharpest increase of 10 and 11 points for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers respectively mainly due to increase in prices of rice, fish, fresh vegetables and fruits. Hukka tobacco, pan leaf, supari, shirting cloth (mill) and bus fare. On the other hand, Jammu & Kashmir recorded a maximum decrease of 2 points each for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers mainly due to decrease in prices of rice, maize, mustard oil, milk, firewood and bus fare.
Haryana figured at the top of the index table with 362 points for Agricultural Labourers and with 364 points in case of Rural Labourers. Manipur remained at the bottom of the index for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers with 307 points each.
Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL and CPI-RL increased from 2.41% and 2.40% respectively in March 2005 to 3.02% and 2.99% in April, 2005. Respective rates of inflation during April, 2004 were 1.53% and 1.83%
