aerb clears pfbr raft construction

Thursday, May 05, 2005

The construction work on 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) fresh raft has commenced after the clearance by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).

Around 3.5 lakh cubic meter of sea water, sludge, muck etc. that had entered 500 MWe FBR (Fast Breeder Reactor ) pit during tsunami were removed, the area was cleaned and washed. Large no. of core samples were taken from the already completed concrete, to ascertain its healthiness to form the PCC layer below the fresh raft.

8000 cubic meter of concreting, 100 mm of fresh PCC layer using fly ash cement and fresh water proofing was done towards preparatory work before laying the reinforcement.

Procedures have been modified for construction to enable completion of the reactor building and reactor vault prior to construction of other buildings. This will help erection of equipment that are on critical path. Thus the time lost due to Tsunami will be made up by changing the construction sequence. BHAVINI, Kalpakkam will endeavour to complete the project ahead of the schedule despite disruption due to Tsunami.
