ADDITIONAL COMMISSIONER (INCOME TAX) SENTENCED IN A BRIBE CASE

Shri S.Pandian, Additional Commissioner, Income Tax, Calicut, has been convicted and sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.10,000/-, by the Special Judge, CBI, Ernakulam for demanding a bribe of Rs.one lakh and accepting Rs.10,000/- from the complainant.

CBI investigation revealed that Shri Pandian while functioning as Additional Commissioner, Income Tax, Kozhikode demanded a bribe of Rs.one lakh and subsequently accepted Rs.10,000/- from one of his assessees, who was also the complainant, through his Chartered Accountant for passing favourable orders exempting complainant's firm from paying about Rs.28.31 lakh as tax for the assessment year 1998-1999.

CBI had registered the case against Shri Pandian on 29.3.2001. After trial, the Special Judge found Shri Pandian guilty for the offence and handed him this sentence.
