The continued support from the General Public in the form of information about the functioning of the illegal exchanges in a clandestine manner on the toll free number has led to the busting of 94 cases throughout the country, since October 2004. Soonafter, on receiving such information the Vigilance and Telecom Monitoring Cell of Department of Telecommunications (DoT), set up in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad with the help of Local Police swung into action swiftly and busted the illegal Exchanges.
It is estimated that these illegal setups have caused approximately a notional loss of 60 crore to the country. The Investigating Agencies have arrested 74 persons in this connection and have registered cases under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Indian Telegraphs Act. It may be mentioned that the setting up of toll-free number 1600-110-420 has brought in far-better results in detecting of illegal exchanges quickly as the complaint calls received on these numbers by various Regional Centres of Vigilance and Telecom Monitoring Cell of DoT are authentic and genuine.
In all these cases it was found that various Internet Service Providers in the respective locality were found to have provided Internet Leased Links of VSNL, Reliance, Sify, C-Tel, Bharti, Netlink, RPG, Coinjinx, Icara, Dishnet DSL (VSNL), Spectranet, D2V, Hathway, TATA, etc. The sophisticated equipments used in the setting up of these illegal exchange have been seized.
