58 central projects report further delays

The latest Flash Report of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Central Sector Projects each costing Rs.100 crore and above says that 58 of the 327 Projects have reported further delays in the range of 1 to 36 months on the completion dates stated the previous month. The Status Report on the projects for March 2005 said that of these, 36 belonged to the Road Transport Sector, 7 to Power, 7 Railways, 5 Petroleum and one each in Steel, Fertilizers and Coal Sectors. The remaining 269 projects did not report any additional delay during the month under review. 93 Railway Projects figured without any information on their latest date of commissioning. Of the total, 44 are mega projects each costing Rs.1000 crore and above.

The Projects reporting additional delays in the Road Transport are 36 packages of the National Highway Development programme, which have slipped in the range upto 10 months. This includes 17 Golden Quadrilateral Packages that have slipped beyond December this year.

The 7 Power Sector Projects reporting additional delays include one Thermal and 6 Power Transmission Projects. In the Railways, 7 projects have reported slippages upto 36 months due to unspecified reasons.

The Report also noted that four projects continue with slippages of the highest order. These are, Kaiga Units III & IV of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd., Revamp of the Namrup Plant, Hindustan Fertlizers Corporation, the Integrated Para-Xylene and Expansion of the Panipat Refinery, both of the Indian Oil Corporation.

The Report concludes saying that the concerned departments have been alerted by the Ministry to take appropriate measures, to check further delays.
