17th national photo contest awards announced

The winners of the 17th National Photo Contest have been announced. Shri Girish J. Kingar of Indore and Shri Asish Bal of Kolkata has been awarded the first prize in the Colour and Black and White Section respectively. The second prize has been bagged by Shri O. P. Soni, Indore in both Colour and Black & White whereas winner of the 3rd prize are Shri Virender Singh of Delhi & P. Mustafa of Kozhikode respectively. The theme of this year’s contest was “Secular India”.

Photo Division, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting organizes the contest for photographers in the country. Each participant can send a maximum of four photographs. The aim of the contest is to encourage the photographers of the country so that talent available in the field could be projected and be given due recognition.

The first prize carries a cash award of rupees twenty thousand, memento and citation. Ten each consolation prizes for the contest have been given to S/Shri Vinay Parelkar, Anindya Majumdar, Kushal Gangopadhyay, Parav Sahni, Sandipan Majumdar, Ms. Ambika Mehra, Akhil Hardia, Patel Piyush Haribhai, T. Srinivasa Reddy, Kailash Soni, Rabin Chakrabarti, Anuthosh Deb, Pravin Rawat Aniruddha Pal, M. K. Jain, Dilip Lokre, Shreeram Chouhan and Vivek J. Desai.

A total number of 1070 entries were received for the competition from the different part of the country. Unique feature of this year’s contest was that the Division received entries from almost all the States including N. E. Region. A national jury comprising eminent photographers Padmashree Raghu Rai, Prof. Subrota Roy of Santiniketan with Shri Debatosh Sengupta Director Photo Divison and Shri Mansa Ram, a representative from the National Foundation of Communal Harmony went through all the entries and selected a total of 73 photographs for the exhibition in addition to the 26 award winning photographs. An exhibition of selected photographs will be inaugurated on May 24, 2005 and would remain open till May 29, 2005. The awards to the winners will also be presented on the same day.
