The rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers witnessed an increase of 0.79 percentage points during April 2005. It went up from 4.17% in March 2005 to 4.96% in April 2005. In April 2004, the inflation rate was 2.23 %.
The All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for April 2005 (base 1982-100) also went up by four points to stand at 529 (five hundred twenty nine) points. The increase is mainly due to rise in the prices of Rice, Moong Dal, Urd Dal, Milk, , Vegetables & Fruits,Gur etc.
The Rise/Fall in index varied from centre to centre. In 12 centres, the index decreased between 1 to 15 points and in 2 centres it remained constant whereas in another 56 centres it recorded an increase of 1 to 13 points when compared to the previous month.
During the month, Asansol centre experienced the maximum increase of 13 points mainly due to rise in prices of Masur Dal, Fresh Fish, Vegetables & Fruits,Soft Coke, Exercise Book, and increase in tailoring charges etc. on the other hand, Thiruvananthapuram Centre experienced a maximum decrease of 15 points mainly on account of fall in prices of Rice, Coconut Oil, Goat Meat, Dry Fish, Eggs, Milk Powder, Dry Chillies, Pan Leaf, Toilet Soap, etc.
The index in respect of six main centres for October 2004 stood at the following level:-
