agricultural experts’ for better seeding practices

Agricultural experts have advised the farmers to use certified/quality seeds and better seeding practices along can enhance about 10-20 per cent in production. The Centre has issued advisories for the benefit of farmers to maximize production in ensuing kharif.

Experts have highlighted the importance of seed replacement for once in four years for self-pollinated crops like Paddy, Wheat, Ragi, Pulses and Oilseeds. Whereas, in case of cross pollinated crops, like Bajra, Jowar, Maize, Sunflower, Rapeseed and Mustard seed replacement once in three years will increase the genetic potential and vitality of farm saved seed and its production. For crops of hybrid seed the seed should be purchased every year.

Agricultural experts have also issued technical advisories for seeding practices. For better crop management the experts have recommended depth of seeds/seedling planting; optimum moisture content in the soil; spacing between rows; spacing between plant within the row; recommended dose of fertilizer; time of fertilizer application; other agronomic practices and plant protection measures.

The Government has advised farmers to buy inputs only from government agencies or authorized retail dealers. The Centre has asked farmers to purchase agricultural inputs like seeds, fertilizers, pesticides etc only from authorized agencies and advised to keep receipt of cash or credit memorandum to make complaints if found cheated. The farmers may complain or contact to the Agriculture Department officials in the case of bad quality of inputs purchased.

The Government also issued guidelines for the farmers during the period of scarcity/non-availability of inputs especially seeds. Farmers can immediately contact the local agriculture extension officer or Block Development Officer about the non-availability of genuine seeds. Farmers may also contact and inform the District Collector/District Magistrate, in this regard. Farmers may also get the seed of required varieties from the progressive farmers of their locality.
