The Minister for Human Resource Development Shri Arjun Singh has said that womens empowerment is a must for the countrys all round development. The Minister said, he is hopeful that the proposed bill on 33% reservation for women in Parliament would take final shape after consensus among the parties. For this, a process of discussion is on. He said this while inaugurating a National Workshop on Women in Industry: policies, problems and prospects organised by the National Commission for Women here today.
The Minister also assured the participating womens group that if any concrete Plan of Action on womens specific issues would come out from this workshop, the Ministry will provide all assistance for the implementation of the proposal.
Shri Singh appealed to those concerned and working for womens welfare to explore ways for their motivation, imagination and greater participation in economy to ensure womens empowerment and the countrys development.
Speaking on this occasion, Smt. Girija Vyas, Chairperson, National Commission for Women has said that despite significant progress made by women in all spheres of life, she is still fighting for her identity. Their participation in decision-making process is still very low.
Highlighting the crucial issues like killing of female foeticide, dowry cases, child marriage, trafficking of women and spreading of AIDS among women, she called for all the concerned to work together to eliminate these serious problems and injustice towards women in society. Underlining the importance of women entrepreneurs Smt. Vyas said that there is need to review government and institutional policies for making them more gender friendly.
The two-day workshop on women in Industry is being organised to understand the need and problems of women entrepreneurs and to evaluate government and institutional policies and identify measures for redressal of the problems faced by the women in industry.
Earlier, Smt. Sumitra Mahajan, Member of Parliament; Smt. Indu Jain, chairperson, Times Group; Smt. Reva Nayyar, Secretary, Department of Women and Child Development, Ministry of HRD and Dr. Sudha Malaiya, Member, NCW also spoke on this occasion.
