upgradation of itis into centres of excellence

he Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today gave its approval for implementing the Scheme of upgradation of 100 ITIs into Centres of Excellence (CoEs) at a total cost of Rs.160 crore on cost sharing basis (75 per cent:25 per cent between the Centre and State governments). CCEA also approved to empower the Secretary, Labour & Employment, for the following:


(i) Flexibility in selection of location of CoEs and areas of Training in case a State so wants subsequently;

(ii) Reallocation of funds from one component of the Scheme to another in the same CoE and between the CoEs in the same State within the overall approved project cost, in consultation with State Government.


Accordingly, 100 existing ITIs will be upgraded into “Centres of Excellence” by introduction of flexible, multi-skilling, modular courses involving industry in all aspects of training from development of curriculum to trade testing. These centers will cater to the skill requirement of the particular cluster of the industry in the surrounding area. The proposal aims at empowerment of ITIs, greater flexibility, reforms in administrative procedure, better linkages with the world of work and conducting training programmes in emerging areas. This is to bring significant improvement in the employment situation of the certificate holders. The project is expected to be completed by 31 March 2009.
