Rajya Sabha

The number of cases of drug abuse reported by the Treatment-cum-Rehabilitation Centres aided by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment during the last three years are:

2002-03 - 261,877

2003-04 - 193,522

Apr-Sept 2004 62,202

The Ministry recognizes that alcoholism and substance abuse is a psychological, sociological and medical problem, which affects the individual and the family. So, it has adopted a strategy of building ‘preventive awareness’ and recovery of addicts through medical treatment, counselling, follow-up and rehabilitation. The scheme for Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drugs) Abuse is implemented for this purpose through registered voluntary organisations.

This information was given by the Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Smt. Meira Kumar in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
