technology convergence to bring rapid growth in data services : dr. shakeel ahmad

Shakeel Ahmad, Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology has said that consequent to the announcement of the New Broadband Policy, the data services, in the years to come, are expected to grow exponentially with the convergence of technology. One such proof in the present day scenario is that India serving as a major hub for the rapid growth in Business Process Outsourcing Centre for the rest of the world. This sector has witnessed an unprecedented growth of over 67% with an annual turnover of US$ 3.6 billion. Dr. Ahmad said this while inaugurating the “13th Convergence India 2005 - International Exhibition and Conference”, here today.

Speaking further on the occasion Dr. Ahmad said that the country’s telecom network is the largest and fastest growing network in the world with about 97 million telephone connections. The year 2007 will see 250 lines with an addition of 2 million telephone lines every month, from now on. Likewise, in the Broadband Policy it is envisaged to achieve a target of 40 million Internet subscribers and 20 million broadband subscribers by the year 2010, he said. The Minister also extended his invitation to leading industry participants to set up their manufacturing units in India. He hoped such ventures would prove to be a win-win situation for all.

The three-day event is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology in which major telecom companies from 25 countries across the globe are participating to showcase emerging convergent technologies for new generation networks. The event will serve as a forum for interaction amongst the telecom industry leaders, investors and the Government.
