t r baalu congratulates chennai port trust for achieving an all time high in handling of cargo

Thursday, March 17, 2005

The Chennai Port has achieved an all time record in handling of cargo with a throughput of 41.57 MT (million tonnes) as on 15.03.2005, exceeding the previous highest throughput of 41.22 MT achieved during 2000-2001 and also the target of 39.17 MT set by the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways for the current fiscal. Out of this 41.57 MT, imports account for 23.27 MT and exports 18.30 MT. Throughput of major commodities handled includes POL 11.12 MT, iron ore 9.19 MT, and containerized cargo 9.36 MT.

Thiru T R Baalu, Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways has congratulated and conveyed his best wishes to the port users, shippers, trade union leaders, CCTL, CPCL, oil companies, and officers and employees of Chennai Port Trust who rendered their valuable service and co-operation to achieve the record throughput of 41.57 MT.

It is significant to note that the 41.22 MT achieved earlier in 2000-2001 was with the help of approximately 10 million tonnes of thermal coal handled on account of TNEB which has since been shifted to the Ennore Port. Chennai Port could make up for this loss in tonnage by increasing the quantum of the existing cargoes like granite blocks, crude oil and attracting cargoes like raw sugar, iron ore pellets, shipment of steel coils, wood pulp etc. to the Port. At this rate, the Chennai Port is all set to achieve a throughput of 44 MT by the end of this fiscal.
