Public Sector General Insurance companies and Life Insurance Corporation of India have taken a number of steps for speedy settlement of insurance claims of the people affected by the deadly Tsunami. These measures include: Designating nodal offices at various centers for settlement of Tsunami claims; establishing help desks/claim assistance cells at Divisional/Branch Offices and simplifying the claim procedures by waiving the requirement of certain documents.
Public Sector General Insurance Companies have settled all claims upto Rs.50,000/- numbering 1214 within two months i.e., by 25th February, 2005. In all they have settled 1486 claims for an amount of Rs.6.30 crores. LIC has also settled 394 claims with total amount of Rs.3.64 crores out of 415 reported so far.
