Shri S. Jaipal Reddy, Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture, released a VCD on Dandi March in commemoration of the 75th year of the historic march by Mahatma Gandhi. The VCD is the version of the documentary film produced by the Films Division in 1985 and is an attempt to reach to the masses the message and spirit of this great historical event of the freedom struggle. The Ministry also has plans to soon release a DVD version also. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Reddy said that the Government of India is planning to organize a year long celebrations to commemorate the event and to recall this great phase of the freedom movement. The Minister said that a committee is being constituted to finalise the programmes/events to mark celebrations. These events would be organized from March 12, the day Gandhiji actually started the Dandi March in 1930.

It was on March 02, 1930 that Gandhiji wrote to the British Government to withdraw the repressive laws (including the Salt Law which provided for tax on the production of salt by the individual natives) failing which, he was to start the agitation which came to be known as Dandi March and breaking of the Salt Law.
