The Government has decided to requisition its employees to work after office hours and on holidays to clear the backlog in Passport office, Rajya Sabha was informed today.
The Minister of State for External Affairs, Shri E. Ahamed told the Rajya Sabha in reply to a question by Smt. Vanga Geetha that nearly 45000 passports were pending in Passport office at Delhi alone causing undue hardships to the public. So it was decided in the public interest to requisition the government employees to work after office hours and on holidays to clear the backlog.
Shri Ahamed further added that the demand for passport service is constantly on the rise and it is being addressed in several ways, including by way of decentralisation, rationalisation of work process, increasing efficiency of government officials and computerisation.
While replying to another question by Smt. Sarla Maheshwari, Shri Ahamed said that passport entry could not be made in Hindi alone as it is presented to foreign authorities on entry and exit. Presently, passport entries are being made in English alone and for the time being it has not been found feasible for technical reasons to make bi-lingual entries in the passports.
