Shri Vilas Muttemwar, Minister for Non Conventional Energy Sources informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply today that his Ministry is implementing a programme for electrification of remote villages and hamlets in the country through various non-conventional energy sources, including solar photovoltaic (SPV) systems and power plants. He further informed that under this programme, 1,722 remote villages and 572 remote colonies/hamlets have been electrified, as on 28.2.2005. The State-wise details of these are given below:-

Shri Muttemwar also said that under the Solar Photovoltaic Demonstration and Utilization Programme, about 3.19 lakh solar home systems and solar plants of aggregate 1.58 MW capacity have been installed mainly in the rural areas of various States/UTs. The Programme is being implemented through the State Renewable Energy Development Agencies. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have also been involved in the implementation of certain projects. The solar systems and power plants for the programme are supplied by manufacturers, both in public and private sectors.
