The Government is negotiating the introduction of Container Security Initiative arrangements at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port as a pilot project on a reciprocal basis. Details of arrangement including composition of Customs complement are yet to be worked out.

Giving this information to Rajya Sabha today the Minister of State for External Affairs, Shri Rao Inderjit Singh said that the introduction of Container Security Initiative arrangements is expected to minimise the risk of containers being used to skip dangerous cargo, including weapons of mass destruction. Its collateral benefit would be to detect various methods of trade fraud. Conversely, the non-introduction of Container Security Initiative arrangements could jeopardise the movement of containers to India’s largest trading partner, the United States, he added.

Shri Singh was replying to a question by Shri Murli Deora.
