Food stocks are maintained by the central government to meet the prescribed minimum buffer stock for food security, for monthly releases of foodgrains for supply through the PDS and other welfare schemes, to meet emergent situations arising out of unexpected crop failure, natural disasters etc. and for market intervention to augment supply so as to help moderate the open market prices. The revision has been made on the recommendations of the 5th Technical Group on Buffer Stocking Policy under the Chairmanship of Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution.
