regulator for broadcasting sector

Government is contemplating the establishment of an autonomous Broadcasting Content Regulatory Authority. Specific needs for the setting up of such an authority for this sector and the experience gained from other sectors shall be taken into account while doing so.

The need to set up a regulator to regulate broadcasting content has been unanimously endorsed by all stakeholders including channel owners, MSOs, cable operators, representatives of consumer and women’s organizations, media heads, etc., at a recent workshop conducted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on 16.02.2005.

This information was given by Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture, Shri S. Jaipal Reddy in written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
