Thursday, March 24, 2005

The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for the ratification of the Amendment to Article 1 of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) to extend the scope of the Convention to cover armed conflicts of international and non-international character. Approval was also given for the ratification of Protocol V on Explosive Remnants of War to address the problem associated with unexploded or abandoned explosive ordnance in post conflict scenario.

This will fulfill the India’s commitment that life and livelihood of civilians must be protected from the menace of weapon systems identified in the Convention and its annexed Protocols and to reduce the risks to civilians in post conflict situations from Explosive Remnants of War.
