railways freight earnings up by over 11 per cent in april-february 2004-2005

Indian Railways earned Rs. 27723.79 crores from 541.97 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue freight during the eleven months of the current financial year ending February 2005, compared to Rs. 24955.83 crores from 503.70 MTs of such traffic during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering an increase of 11.09 per cent.

Of the total earnings, Rs. 11794.00 crores came from transportation of 244.55 MTs of coal, followed by Rs. 1140.29 crores from 40.03 MTs of raw material to steel plants, Rs. 1367.96 crores from 13.33 MTs of finished iron and steel, Rs. 1325.61 crores from 32.88 MTs of iron ore for exports, Rs. 2231.96 crores from 48.79 MTs of cement, Rs. 2855.78 crores from 41.72 MTs of foodgrains, Rs. 1192.05 crores from 26.13 MTs of fertilizers, Rs. 2499.39 crores from 28.95 MTs of Petroleum Oil and Lubricant (POL) and Rs. 3316.75 crores from 65.59 MTs of other goods.

The freight traffic in Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKMs) in millions increased by 7.85 per cent from 344282 NTKMs in millions to 371313 NTKMs in millions.

Earnings per Million Tonne in crores increased by 3.25 per cent from Rs. 49.55 crores to Rs. 51.15 crores per million tonne. Earnings per Net Tonne Kilometre (NTKM) in paise increased by 3.00 paise from 72.49 paise to 74.66 paise per NTKM.
