Quality standards for bread in the country are regulated under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954 and rules framed there under which is administered by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
It has come to the notice of DGHS that some of the manufacturers have not given the `Best Before date/date of manufacture on the packages of bread.
The Food (Health) Authorities of the States/Union Territories are responsible to take necessary action in the matter under the provisions of Prevention of Food Adulteration Act and rules framed thereunder. They have also been advised by DGHS to give wide publicity amongst both consumers and industry associations for compliance of mandatory labeling provisions contained in the Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules, 1955.
This information was given in Rajya Sabha today by the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri Taslimuddin in a written reply to a question of Shri Ekanath K. Thakur.
