Production levels of Finished Steel, Fertilizer and Cement were below target during the period April 2004 to January 2005. Drawing the attention of the concerned departments, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, in its latest Report on the performance of the Infrastructure Sector during the period said, that Finished Steel was 9.8 per cent i.e. 3.559 million tonnes below target while Fertilizer was 5.8 per cent i.e. 0.803 million tonnes lower. Cement Production was 0.1 per cent below target i.e. lesser by 0.145 million tonnes. The Report while noting the better performance of the Telecom Sector observed that the Net telephone connections provided, needs attention.
Observing as noteworthy, the performance of Petroleum, Shipping, Railways, Coal and Power, the Report said that all these sectors of Infrastructure achieved production levels more than the target during the period under review.
In Petroleum, Refinery production was 3.8 per cent above target i.e. 3.848 million tonnes more, while Crude Oil was 1.1 per cent above i.e. 0.309 million tonnes higher. Coal was also 3 per cent higher than the target i.e. 8.89 million tonnes above. In Railways, the Revenue Earning Freight Traffic was 2.6 per cent more than the target i.e. 12.31 million tonnes higher. In the Shipping and Port Sector, Cargo handling at major ports was 2.8 per cent more i.e. 8.617 million tonnes above target. Power generation was marginally above target i.e. 0.1 per cent equivalent to 0.382 billion units.
As already reported, all the 11 Infrastructure Sectors achieved higher growth during the period in comparison with the same period of the previous fiscal, with the above mentioned sectors exceeding their target.
