A provision for acquisition of 20000 wagons in terms of Four Wheeler Units was made in the current years’ Budget i.e. 2004-05. Out of which a quantity of 17613.5 has been procured till 28.2.2005. Efforts are being made to achieve the budgetary target for the current year. Stating this in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister of State for Railways, Shri R. Velu informed the House that wagons in terms of Four Wheeler Units (FWUs) procured during the last three years was as under:

The Minister further informed the Members that wagon requirement for the 11th Plan have not been worked out. This exercise will be done when the 11th Plan is prepared. As per the Mid-term Review of the 10th Plan sent to Planning Commission, wagon requirement has been assessed as 94214 FWUs. For balance two years of Xth Plan, adequate provision will be made for manufacture of required wagons by increasing supply of wheel sets and other inputs, he added.
