prime minister stresses need for security to ensure economic growth

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh has underlined the need for a conducive security environment to achieve economic growth. He was speaking at the 36th Raising Day function of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) here today. He said that contribution of security personnel to the country’s economic growth cannot be under-estimated. Appreciating the work done by the CISF over the years, the Prime Minister pointed out that apart from ensuring industrial security, CISF is now performing a larger number of other duties. This is an ample proof of the efficiency with which the force has worked. Dr. Manmohan Singh lauded the role of CISF in providing quick relief to those affected by the Tsunami disaster recently. CISF is currently providing security to 214 Public Sector Undertakings and 47 airports. It is also providing fire protection cover to 75 undertakings. CISF has also been entrusted with the responsibility of disaster response in the country.



Earlier, the Prime Minister inspected the colourful parade and took salute of the marching contingents. He also presented President’s Police Medals to five officers for distinguished service.



Those who attended the function included the Home Minister, Shri Shivraj Patil; the Minister of State for Home, Shri Manik Rao Gavit; the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s office, Shri Prithviraj Chavan and the Uttar Pradesh Governor, Shri Rajeshwar.
