The Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC), a public sector unit of the Ministry of Coal produced 205.57 lakh tonnes of lignite during 2003-04 as against 186.24 lakh tonnes and 183.69 lakh tonnes during 2002-03 and 2001-02 respectively. Power production by the unit in the year 2003-04 was 16,388.98 million units against 14,969.95 million units in 2002-03 and 14,451.32 million units in 2001-02.
NLC is in the business of captive lignite mining to meet its fuel requirements for power generation. It has exceeded its targets in power generation in all the three years. Lignite production depends upon the fuel requirement and overburden removal.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
