performance of india in international sports events

The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Sunil Dutt in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today gave the details of Medals won by Indian sportspersons/teams in major International events during the last five years. The details are as below:

1 Indian sportspersons/teams won 102 Gold, 58 Silver and 37 Bronze medals and secured 1st position in SAF Games held in Kathmandu in 1999.

2 Ms Karnam Malleswari won a Bronze medal in Weightlifting (Women) for India during Olympic Games held at Sydney in 2000.

3 India won a record 69 medals (30 Gold, 22 Silver and 17 Bronze) and finished 4th in the overall ranking during Commonwealth Games held at Manchester (UK) in 2002.

4 India won 36 medals (11 Gold, 12 Silver and 13 Bronze) during Asian Games held at Busan (Korea) in 2002.

5 Indian contingent won 80 medals (19 Gold, 32 Silver and 29 Bronze) and finished 2nd in the overall ranking behind China during 1st Afro Asian Games held at Hyderabad in 2003.

6 India contingent won 101 Gold, 59 Silver and 31 Bronze medals during SAF Games held at Islamabad (Pakistan) in 2004.

7 Lt.Col R.V.S. Rathore won a Silver Medal in Shooting (Double Trap-Men) for India during Olympic Games held at Athens in 2004.

8 In para Olympics 2004, held in Athens, Shri Devendar won a gold medal in Javeline throw and Shri Rajender Singh Rahelu won bronze medal in Power lifting event.
