Estimates of employment & unemployment are obtained through labour force surveys conducted by National Sample Survey Organisation from time to time. As per the survey carried out in 1999-2000(latest) industry-wise distribution of employed persons and their percentage on usual status basis during 1999-2000 are as follows:

As per the India Vision-2020 document of the Planning Commission, by 2020, total employment in agriculture may fall to less than 45 per cent, while the share of service sector increases proportionately.
This was stated by the labour and Employment Minister, Shri K. Chandrasekhar Rao in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
