27.92 lakh people were affected in one way or the other and about 1,80,600 houses were fully damaged in the Tsunami disaster. The States affected were Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Anadaman and Nicobar Islands. The Government of India has approved a special package of Rs.3644.05 crore named as “Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation Package for Tsunami affected areas” which inter alia provides assistance for intermediate temporary houses to be constructed by Sates/UTs before the onset of the monsoon and the assistance for multi-hazard proof pucca houses thereafter.

The assistance for pucca houses will be used for supporting the housing component of rehabilitation plans being prepared for the affected areas with assistance of the Core Group established in the Planning Commission and in consultation with relevant Ministries and State Governments. Further assistance in subsequent phases would be released for supporting these plans.

In case of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, 10,100 intermediate shelters are being constructed with the support of Ministry of Home Affairs and the target is to complete their construction before the onset of monsoon. The Ministry of Urban Development has been entrusted with the task of constructing Pucca Houses in the Islands and the assistance for this is not included in the aforesaid package.
