opening of regional it centres abroad

The Government of India is contemplating to establish regional I.T. training centres overseas. Giving this information to Rajya Sabha today the Minister of State for External Affairs, Shri E. Ahamed said that under ITEC Programme of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India has assisted Vietnam in setting up of Software and IT Training Centre. Feasibility study was conducted by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology in 2002-03 and the project has been implemented by the Hanoi People’s Committee. The Indian Prime Minister during his visit to Laos PDR in November 2002 announced assistance under ITEC Programme for setting up of an IT Centre in three phases. Phase I of the project is under implementation.

Timor-Leste is being assisted by India under ITEC Programme in setting up of an IT capacity building project, he added and said that Government of India has also approved, in principle, setting up of an IT Training Centre in Central America.

The Minister was replying to a question by Shri P.K. Maheshwari.
