The Union Finance Minister, Shri P. Chidambaram, has proposed to enhance the target of Credit Linking in the next fiscal from two lakh Self Help Groups (SHGs) to 2.5 lakhs SHGs.
Announcing this in the Lok Sabha today, the Finance Minister said that the programme of linking SHGs with the banking system has emerged as the major micro-finance programme of the country and 560 banks including 48 commercial banks, 196 regional rural banks and 316 cooperative banks are now actively involved in the programme.
