Geological Survey of India (GSI), Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL) and Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL) conduct regional and promotional exploration programmes in the different States to identify new coal resources. During last three years, they carried out exploration programme in Raniganj and Birbhum coalfields of West Bengal; East Bokaro, South Karanpur, North Karanpura and Rajmahal Group of Coalfields of Jharkhand; Talcher and Ib-River of Orissa; Mand-Raigarh, Korba, Hasdeo-Arand, Tatapani - Ramkola and Sonhat, Chhattisgarh; Sohagpur, Singrauli, Pench Valley, Tawa Valley, Sonada-Gurdunda of Madhya Pradesh; Kamptee, Wardha Valley, Katol and Bander of Maharashtra; Makum, Assam; Godavari Valley, Andhra Pradesh; and Rangit Valley of Sikkim.

The exploration for new coal deposits gives regional information about the block / area. If the coal block is found promising, further detailed exploration is required before the scheme is taken up. Normally, it takes four to five years for completion of detailed exploration and thereafter, mining project report and mining plan are prepared.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
