Rapid development of the Road, Rail and Air connectivity and the growth of Telecommunication Network in the north eastern region is the key to rapid socio-economic growth of the North Eastern Region. This was stated by the Minister of DoNER, Shri P R Kyndiah at the inauguration of North East Trade Expo 2005 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi today.

Speaking at the function, Shri Kyndiah said the region has a vast untapped potential that can be unlocked by a proper communications network. This is why the Central government has decided to invest heavily in ensuring proper ‘connectivity’ both within the region and with rest of India.

“My Ministry has made large scale investments in infrastructure by funding through the Non-Lapsable Central pool of Resources (NLCPR) and the North East Council (NEC). We have a large number of projects in Power, Road & Transport, Flood Control, Irrigation and Air Connectivity which directly benefit the people of the region,” he said. He also announced that the NE Trade Expo will now become an annual feature and will be held in March of every year.

The North East Trade Expo provides a platform to all 8 North Eastern states to showcase their unique products and highlight their potential for growth. The Expo is jointly organized by DoNER Ministry and India Trade Promotion Org. (ITPO). The main objective of the Expo is to provide opportunities and open avenues for trade, commerce, business expansion, joint ventures and investment opportunities in these states. The theme of this year’s Expo is ‘Magic Weaves of North East’. During the next few days the Expo will have a seminar on investment opportunities, an exposition of dances from North Eastern states, painting and photo exhibitions, fashion show and a food court to showcase the variety of North East cuisine.

The Governor of Assam, Shri Ajay Raj Sharma, Secretary of DoNER Shri Laxmi Chand and officials from ITPO also attended the opening ceremony.
